I don't really follow AFL, but I do appreciate the extra day which gives me another chance to get in the garden. Months in advance, I decided to take a day of leave on either side of the long weekend as I reasoned that it should be warm enough to spend the whole 5 day break out in the garden.
With the weather not following the forecast (we had warnings about severe winds and storms), there was nonetheless enough opportunities to get out into the garden.
I used the unexpected sunshine on Thursday to finish sprinkling gypsum and laying cardboard on the remaining section near my potted fruit trees. I also finished laying bricks for the small wall of the new berry bed against the back fence.
The sunny patches of Friday were used to begin weeding the other new garden bed in preparation for being able to provide the gypsum-cardboard treatment.
I scored a stack of cardboard boxes on Saturday from the local greengrocer (would've been more but one of their helpful staff took away the trolley that had been left to one side for me to bring my own trolley to transfer the collapsed boxes to). So I spent Saturday evening pulling off sticky tape and metal staples.
Sunday was bright, sunny, and came with gale force winds. I was able to finish weeding the garden bed, but I had to wait until very late in the afternoon when the wind wasn't quite as strong to be able to finish the rest of the preparation of the garden bed.
On Monday, I took the last two and half buckets worth of mulch and spread a thin layer on the exposed cardboard from Thursday's efforts.
I've worked out that I need between 2-3 cubic metres more mulch to properly finish the job, including underneath the fruit tree pots. It'll do for now though, as I've ordered the vegie mix soil to be delivered early this Saturday in anticipation of the next biggest task that needs doing - preparing the garden bed spaces for plants by adding actual soil.
I'm getting really excited seeing how much progress is being made!
